The Carpathian Foundation was founded in 1994 by the East – West Institute, with a generous financial support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. The Foundation was created to serve as an active and unique cross - border grantmaker in the Carpathian region. Its purpose was to financially support civic initiatives and projects of non-profit non-governmental organizations and local governments. Local Carpathian Foundations work in five countries: Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine and Romania, and cover the relevant parts of these countries which form the Carpathian Euroregion.

Today, the network of Carpathian Foundations is a loose one, in a sense that member foundations have developed their own programmatic strategies, and access funding independently.

Karpatská nadácia - Carpathian Foundation, Slovakia, resides in Kosice, and serves two Slovak regions (Kosice and Presov) - a population of ca. 1.5 million.

The mission of the Foundation is to support development of the eastern Slovak region in terms of its traditional values of mutual help and respect for cultural and ethnic diversity. Since 1994, the Carpathian Foundation, Slovakia has been providing financial support, training and advisory to active people and organizations in the name of improved living conditions in eastern Slovakia. The core activity are grant programs and scholarship programs. The Foundation makes grants to support nonprofit organizations, individuals and local governments in a variety of areas. The main target group are marginalized groups and people experiencing a disadvantaged background. In the years 1995 – 2009, the Carpathian Foundation, Slovakia supported over 150 projects with a total amount of some 830,000 EUR. The Foundation focuses on supporting multi-cultural and inter-ethnic communities, building cross-sectoral partnerships and public engagement.

To raise funds for these programs, the Foundation partners with donors, mainly corporates. In return for their donations, donors receive high quality services, and get connected with local communities. Within its development strategy, the Carpathian Foundation approaches new funding resources and communicates with local and regional business community. Also, it maintains an ongoing and very frequent communication and collaboration with non-profit organizations and other civic society institutions.
