several projects as associate partners. The institution has a project office and
encourages different organizations to take part in projects to raise the level of
education and knowledge in the region. The organization aims to catch up with the
EU standarts and Turkish legislation also supports this need. Being in the pre-accession
period, Turkey is expected to follow up with the EU standarts in its institutions
and capacity and institution building are essential for the government staff. For
better social cohesion, we feel our organization should take part in intercultural
activities that will strenghten the internalization of EU decisions and cross-border
cooperation. For a changing world, we want to prepare our staff and our clients
by making lifelong learning a reality in the EU context.

Address: Letná 27, 040 01, Košice, Eastern Slovakia, Slovakia
Web site: www.karpatskanadacia.sk/ www.carpathianfoundation.org
e-mail: cfsk@cfoundation.org
The Carpathian Foundation was founded in 1994 by the East – West Institute, with
a generous financial support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. The Foundation
was created to serve as an active and unique cross - border grantmaker in the Carpathian
region. Its purpose was to financially support civic initiatives and projects of
non-profit non-governmental organizations and local governments. Local Carpathian
Foundations work in five countries: Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine and Romania,
and cover the relevant parts of these countries which form the Carpathian Euroregion.
Today, the network of Carpathian Foundations is a loose one, in a sense that member
foundations have developed their own programmatic strategies, and access funding
independently.
Karpatská nadácia - Carpathian Foundation, Slovakia, resides in Kosice, and serves
two Slovak regions (Kosice and Presov) - a population of ca. 1.5 million.
The mission of the Foundation is to support development of the eastern Slovak region
in terms of its traditional values of mutual help and respect for cultural and ethnic
diversity. Since 1994, the Carpathian Foundation, Slovakia has been providing financial
support, training and advisory to active people and organizations in the name of
improved living conditions in eastern Slovakia. The core activity are grant programs
and scholarship programs. The Foundation makes grants to support nonprofit organizations,
individuals and local governments in a variety of areas. The purpose of grantmaking
activities is to engage people into development of their home towns or rural areas.
The main target group are marginalized groups and people experiencing a disadvantaged
background. In the years 1995 – 2009, the Carpathian Foundation, Slovakia supported
over 150 projects with a total amount of some 830,000 EUR. To its grantees, the
Foundation provides financial support, expert advisory services, training and technical
assistance to local communities in order to facilitate development of networks,
partnerships and collaboration in the region. The Foundation focuses on supporting
multi-cultural and inter-ethnic communities, building cross-sectoral partnerships
and public engagement.
To raise funds for these programs, the Foundation partners with donors, mainly corporates.
In return for their donations, donors receive high quality services, and get connected
with local communities. Within its development strategy, the Carpathian Foundation
approaches new funding resources and communicates with local and regional business
community. Also, it maintains an ongoing and very frequent communication and collaboration
with non-profit organizations and other civic society institutions. Within several
of its programs, the Foundation has provided series of trainings for different target
groups, such as nonprofit organizations, Roma etc. Also, the Foundation promotes
the topics of corporate social responsibility and inter-cultural relations in a
multicultural society. The Foundation is an active member of a high quality international
network, and has an access to extensive international know - how and experience.
